John McCain says “We are all Georgians” and Matthew Yglesias’s snark gets a bit out of control. It turns out that following Kennedy’s speech, we didn’t go to war with Russia, though in an opposite precedent, the French helped us out a bit in Afghanistan (peacekeeping efforts only, I believe). Just looking at the history, it’s not like McCain’s comments don’t imply military support for Georgia in a confrontation with Russia. And at this point, no one in NATO, Russia or Georgia will take them to imply that support. That doesn’t make McCain’s comments especially smart, but it suggests not getting too bent out of shape.
Might as well link for Matt for part of what makes McCain’s comments genuinely silly.
